I have the same handy tool that you have; I bought it on a whim because it was only $0.50 at the pet store, and I figured "why not?" Turns out that since it's so wet this spring, the ticks are extra bad. My dog didn't have a single tick on her last year, and now she's picking them up. Never had an embedded head or anything, and I just toss the tick in a cup of denatured alcohol to kill it after extracting it.
